#10 ALLOSAURUS
With great ferocity and formidable appearance, the Allosaurus is one of the largest carnivorous species that existed in the planet. Its proportions were of about 26 feet in length and 10 feet in height. Can you imagine that? Their weight reached up to a ton and according to findings, it is believed that they hunted in groups ambushing their prey and sinking their ferrous teeth without fervor to kill it and then devour they prey.
Its head was big in comparison with other theropods that belonged to its suborder and had some characteristic crests that make it impossible for to you not to recognize them. Of course, it had a 9 vertebrae short neck that despite its size was very useful to start their succulent bites. its tail had around 50 bones. It really was to be feared!
#9 ALBERTOSAURUS
This fearsome dinosaur inhabited western North America near the end of the Cretaceous. Many of its large and heavy fossils were discovered in the Red Deer River located in Alberta, Canada, which is why it bears the name of Albertosaurio which also means ‘Alberta lizard’. Despite being smaller, if we speak comparatively of the other Tyrannosaurids that belonged to their family order, the Albertosaurus is undoubtedly one of the largest carnivores measuring up to 29 feet wide and close to 10 feet in height, although 33 feet long specimens have been found.
It had a kneader weight that is estimated at 1.9 tons. Amazing! Of course, it had its huge head that could measure up to 3 feet in length and was accompanied by a powerful jaw with about 60 slightly curved and lethal teeth. It was one of the main predators of the Cretaceous era and attacked camouflaging large herbivores, then, at high speed, rush into them with an open jaw and landed a mortal bite in their neck from which it was difficult to escape. All a potential predator!
#8 KRONOSAURUS
Did you want to see a monumental marine dinosaur? Well, your wish has been fulfille: Meet the corpulent Kronosaurus, which with its measurements of 33 feet in length, 6 feet high and a weight of 11 tons could not be missed in this predator’s top. It lived in the Lower Cretaceous period in what is now Australia and Colombia, places where some of its fossils were found, and is one of the most dangerous marine predators that inhabited the seas of the Earth.
It belonged to the plesiosauri order that was characterized by having a short neck and large head. In the case of this threatening predator, its cranial size was almost 10 feet with a huge long and narrow mouth, which could devour you in a single bite. Its maxilla contained teeth that could reach 2.7 inches the largest, because the back teeth were smaller fitting to the shape of his snout.
#7 SAUROPHAGANAX
The Saurophaganax lived at the end of the Jurassic period in what is now North America. Its fossils were discovered in Oklahoma, United States, but parts of his specimen were also found such as the femur, vertebrae of the tail and hip bones in New Mexico. It was one of the most potential predators of this period and its size was so large that it was cataloged as ‘the supreme carnivore’ measuring about 36 feet wide, about 13 feet tall, along with its massive body weight of just over 3 tons. Almost the weight of 3 rhinos!
Despite the evidence of its remains, there were many controversies because of its similarity with the first specimen of our top: the Allosaurus, but thanks to the discovery mentioned above, in New Mexico, this situation has been clarified by proving it is from a different genre. It had peculiar ridges on the back of his body and because of its great size, it had an enormous need to eat to such an extent that, if it did not find food, it was able to snatch someone else’s prey with great force. The Saurophaganax is the official Oklahoma fossil and if you were impressed with it you can see one of its most complete skeletons and live a Jurassic experience at the Sam Noble Natural History Museum. #6 BAHARIASAURUS
Their fossils were discovered by the German paleontologist Ernst Stromer in Egypt and others in the Republic of Niger. The Bahariasaurus is the only species found in its genus and lived in the middle of the Cretaceous in Africa, being one of the greatest predators of those times. But that was not the only thing that made it stand out among all the dinosaurs that inhabited this continent, but also had one of the longest dimensions reaching about 39 feet, just over 10 feet long, together with a huge weight of 2.5 tons. Unbelievable! It had bony protuberances on both eyes that were a huge asset when fighting; large and strong legs that made it a fast predator and unlike other dinosaurs in this top, it had long arms. Without a doubt this was one of the most violent dinosaurs of the era!
#5 TYRANNOSAURUS REX
Do you remember the fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex from the blockbuster movie Jurassic Park? Are you a fan of this dinosaur? This is your lucky day! Because we are about to tell you more about it. Its name literally means ‘tyrant’ or ‘evil’ which means that it had absolute power, the term ‘Saurus’ denotes ‘lizard’ and the word ‘Rex’ was added, meaning in its entirety that this it has been the most ferocious animal that inhabited the earth and that is the true ‘King of lizards, tyrant predator’. From just listening to that, we get goosebumps! Thanks to its fossil findings, the Tyrannosaurus Rex is one of the most studied and known to science, discovering that only one species of these toured our planet.
It lived during the Cretaceous era with an impressive 39 feet in length, like the Bahariasaurus with the difference that the great Tyrannosaurus Rex could reach up to 13 feet high, although they have found some that could measure up to 16 feet high which made it even bigger. It was giant! Its skull is one of the most exorbitant, reaching about 4 feet and was balanced by its monumental tail. Like the other theropods, it did not have long forelegs since they barely were 1 meter long, but they were endowed with two terrifying, extremely sharp claws that will surely tear your skin effortlessly and serve as a weapon to devour their prey. According to the latest studies, the Tyrannosaurus Rex was not very fast, however, that did not stop it from being a killing machine!
#4 HAINOSAURUS
Another marine dinosaur with impressive dimensions is the distinguished Hainosaurus, who was probably the largest marine predator ever. Its size to date has been debated by experts. At first it was estimated that the measure of this great dinosaur was 56 feet long. Surprising! Then, new studies announced that it was 49 feet, but finally it was determined to be 40 feet in length with 10 feet in height. Isn’t it huge?
Not only was it the giant of the seas in the Upper Cretaceous, but also an excellent hunter who used to feed on other marine reptiles such as the great Elasmosaurus. Surely, you wonder how it was able to attack a reptile of abysmal size. The answer is that, thanks to its huge mouth with more than 60 sharp teeth, once it had its prey in its jaw, it closed with great pressure, killing its victim on the spot. HOW HORRIFYING! That’s not all; it also owned an extensive tail that allowed it, its 23-ton body, to swim quickly from one side to the other like a fish. If the Tyrannosaurus Rex was terror on earth, the Hainosaurus was fear in the ocean.
#3 GIGANOTOSAURUS
The Giganotosaurus was found in the Argentinian Patagonia by amateur fossil hunter Ruben Carolini in 1993, which makes it one of the most recent dinosaur discoveries in history. It lived in the Upper Cretaceous era measuring 42 feet long and more than 13 feet high, although some scientists have determined that it could measure up to 16 feet high. That’s monumental!
But like all beings with highly proportioned measures, the Giganotosaurus also owned an admirable skull that could be almost 6 feet in length and a mouth so large that it could devour entire prey. That was not the only huge element of it! Unlike other theropods, the giganotosaurus had one of the longest and strongest hind legs, which undoubtedly supported its powerful weight of almost 8 tons. Its femur alone was about 6 feet long. How amazing is that?
#2 CARCHARODONTOSAURUS
Its name means ‘shark tooth reptile’ for its representative jaws 6 inches long jaws. They are so pointy and abundant that without much effort, it would remove the skin and flesh with a single bite. The horror! It lived in the middle of the Cretaceous era in what is now Africa and its popularity in the scientific world is not the only thing that distinguishes it, but also its great dimensions of almost 45 feet long and 13 feet high, which total a weight of almost 15 tons. Like a 22-foot truck full of cargo!
The Carcharodontosaurus was one of the great predators of its era and it hunted its prey at a speed of 19 miles per hour with his mouth open. It is believed that, although their front legs were small, they put them into action to hold their prey and tear it mercilessly to feed its great stomach that will undoubtedly have been balanced with its big bulky body.
#1 SPINOSAURUS
If you were surprised with the previous carnivore, surely the Spinosaurus will leave you even more amazed with its unparalleled dimensions that can be up to 59 feet long and 13 feet high. Impossible to picture, right? This great predator inhabited the Cretaceous period in the African continent, along with the colossal carcharodontosaurus, and had some unique spines on the back of its body that formed a kind of hump, which undoubtedly made it different from other predatory dinosaurs.
Its skull was long and crocodile-like. It had teeth so sharp it could even eat the bones of their prey. Wait a minute; you have not seen everything yet! The most surprising thing is that it was also an excellent swimmer. Yes, that’s right! By spending part of his life in the water swimming or hunting marine food with it large and powerful claws hooked claws, it became a swimmer par excellence. It lived both on land and water. We have to admit that it’s really great!
